About the Business
Locomotive is an omni-channel business communication platform based in Paris, France. With four years of operational experience, it empowers businesses — from car dealerships to customer support teams — to streamline conversations across phone, SMS, messaging platforms, reviews, payments, and more, all within a single web application. The product is critical to their clients’ day-to-day operations, making usability and clarity a top priority.
Objective
The task was straightforward, but high-impact: revamp the design of the Locomotive web application with a focus on elevating the user experience. The team wanted to address inconsistencies, eliminate friction in navigation, and most importantly, build a modular and scalable design system that could support new features in the future — even without a full-time designer in the loop.
Solution
I partnered closely with the co-founders and engineering team over the course of two months to deeply understand the product, its users, and internal development workflows. The design overhaul involved:
Auditing the existing UI and UX to identify patterns, redundancies, and usability gaps
Re-architecting core layouts to prioritize the most-used functions for each user type
Creating a responsive interface that works beautifully across desktop and mobile
Establishing a scalable component system to future-proof the product and accelerate future development
Despite the product’s complexity, we ensured every screen and interaction felt purposeful, intuitive, and light, never bloated.
Results and Impact
The entire design revamp was delivered on time and on spec. The development team quickly implemented the new design, thanks to the clarity and modularity of the handoff.
Early feedback from internal stakeholders and users has been overwhelmingly positive, with the new UI described as cleaner, faster to navigate, and more cohesive. While full usage metrics are still being gathered post-launch, the foundation laid by this revamp has already made it easier for the team to build new features with confidence.
